This is my personal story of raising a child with a mental illness. As she enters adulthood I am finding the journey is getting harder and it sometimes is isolating. In the African-American community, dealing with something like this (mental health) is still taboo and people who aren’t living it sometimes just don’t get it.
Take this journey with me and know that if you are caring for a family member with special needs, you are not alone. I will share my story, the background, where we are today, where we are going and what I have learned along the way. I will also tell you about things that have helped me cope along the way. Once you walk a mile in my shoes, maybe you’ll be a bit more understanding when you see a child that you think is just acting up in public, or you judge a parent that seems too over protective.
Trust me, there may be more to their story than you know.
